Welcome to Indio, California.

Indio, California, is a U.S. city located in the Coachella Valley of Southern California's desert region. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 49,116. Indio has hosted the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival since 1999 as well as other regularly-scheduled festivals. Notable among these are the "Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival" held each February and the "Indio International Tamale Festival" held each December.
The community center offers many programs in which to enjoy and learn from. So whether its to play around of golf at one of the many famous facilities, or go on a picnic in the Joshua Tree National Forest, the centers are here for you. Indio also host many national sport games and the Indio Desert Circuit, the largest horse show in America. Here, in this beautiful, small community one may find a festive air, however, this city has its eyes on the future. With their new economic plans, affordable housing and low land cost, Indio is a city that is bound to continue to grow and prosper. Though, they will grow, this community has taken pride in their small town and the quality of life it offers to both the young and the young at heart. Indio is approximately 75 miles north of the California-Baja California Mexico border and 125 miles east of the center of Los Angeles. Sharing the Coachella Valley with such international resort destinations as Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells, Indio is the valley's largest and oldest city. It's also a great place to stay and play - golf, tennis, shopping, dining, and casino nightlife are "indigenous" to Indio. Indio's climate is characterized by clean, dry air; blue skies, pleasant winters, infrequent rainfall, moderate afternoon breezes with occasional gusts or wind storms, hot summers and sunshine 350 days a year are also attributes.
Tucked within the Colorado Desert, surrounded by the San Jacinto Mountains to the east and the Santa Rosa Mountains to the south, Indio began as an Indian village, with Native Americans drawn to its palm oases and water sources.

Starting Thanksgiving weekend with the first of three Native American pow-wows, and continuing with the International Tamale Festival, the Indio Desert Circuit Horse Show, the Southwest Arts Festival and the National Date Festival, the winter season is filled with exciting things for visitors to do.
The annual Indio International Tamale Festival in December has something for everyone - a celebration of food, cultural heritage, fun and entertainment, it's one of the top 10 regional food festivals in the country, according to USA Today. More than 300,000 tamales of every description, from traditional to gourmet, were served at the 2002 event. Many try to time their Indio visit for the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival in early February. It's a great place to watch a camel race or an Arabian Nights Pageant, and sip a delicious date shake. Fans of Southwestern art and a variety of other genres will not want to miss the Southwest Arts Festival, held in late January and early February. The festival magically transforms Indio's Empire Polo Club with bold splashes of color. Coupled with the California desert's bloom at the peak of its spectacular season, it is a great time to visit Indio and the Coachella Valley.
The Indio Desert Circuit Horse Show, which runs from the last week in January through the middle of March, brings 3,000 horses and 9,000 support staff to Indio's Desert Horse Park for the largest hunter and jumper horse show west of the Mississippi. Indio has hosted horse owners and fans of the sport, from around the world, to participate in or be spectators at this spectacular event. And just to prove that Indio could also be called the equestrian capital of the West (along with the date capital of the U.S.), the city also plays host to several thousand polo ponies and their owners over the November through April polo season. The rich and famous have come to Indio to play polo, including Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, Sly Stallone, Stephanie Powers and more.
Indio's exciting and intriguing history includes ancient Indian civilizations, hardy settlers willing to live with the harsh summer climate, railroad barons and workers, the building of the All American Canal bringing precious water to the desert, the first date shoots brought to Indio from the Middle East, and more. These are all being depicted in a series of historic murals located throughout the Old Town area. Yes, Indio could also be called the "City of Murals."
Indio is also one of the best gateways to Joshua Tree National Park, where the Colorado and Mojave Deserts come together to form some of the most unique geological displays known to man. Joshua Tree offers fantastic opportunities for camping, climbing, hiking and bird watching. Spring wildflowers blanket the park and provide a wondrous visual counterpoint to the animated forms of the Joshua tree. Sharp-eyed visitors may also see a local roadrunner beep-beeping across the park's wildflowered carpet, and everyone will appreciate the fascinating geologic formations found in the park.
Golf is king in the California desert, and Indio is situated within minutes of more than a dozen championship courses and golf clubs. From lush resort courses to tough desert target lay-outs, Indio is well-positioned as the base for a great golf vacation. Staying in Indio and neighboring cities in the Coachella Valley is a breeze with a wide selection of national hotel chains and unique resorts and inns to choose from, in every price category. Accommodations can fill up in the "season," which runs November through March, so booking ahead is always recommended.
